M.10 - 22/2023 Season
Pontypridd United
Abergavenny
By Eloise Martin
The Dragons secured a further three points in a 3-0 win at home to Abergavenny last week. The side put in an excellent performance to beat the league's newest additions with goals from Jasmine Turner and Olivia Francis.
It was just eight minutes before Jasmine Turner found her first goal of the season. Ellie Gunney set up Liv Francis to run down the right wing before sending in a cross to Turner who volleyed the ball into the top right corner. Liv Francis almost made it two when Carys Bufton delivered a ball to Francis who struck towards the corner, but the goalkeeper made the save.
Abergavenny attempted to equalise when they got a break and drove into the box before taking a shot, but it was nothing Maisie Jones could not handle as she caught it calmly into her arms. Then there was another close chance for Pontypridd United when Emily Bayliss cut into the box passing numerous players before taking a shot which was just wide of the post. It was just before half time when Jasmine Turner doubled the Dragons lead. Liv Francis beat the defender to send the cross in to find Turner waiting in the box to produce another volley straight past the goalkeeper. Alison Witts had the last chance of the half as she turned and shot just over the crossbar.
The Dragons started the second half strong with another chance for the Dragons. Kirstie Pervin-Davies' shot deflected onto Alison Witts who also struck but her shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. Abergavenny still had their chances and Maisie Jones was forced into an excellent save tipping the ball just over the crossbar to keep the Dragon's clean sheet.
Francis was knocking on the door and forced the goalkeeper into a save when she found space down the left win and shot across the goal. Not long after in the 75th minute she found her goal as she received a cross from Turner and calmly took a touch before shooting past the keeper. With the game closing, Alison Witts nearly made it four when she found herself free in the box with the ball, but her effort was over the crossbar.
Overall, a crucial win for the Dragons who took home their well-deserved three points! Speaking to manager James Fishlock after the game he said:
“I am really happy that we were able to put on that performance, we painted some nice pictures with the ball. I thought we were aggressive even without the ball and we created lots of chances.
“We said last week we wanted to get the season rolling after our win at Barry in the cup and the girls have continued that good form!”
