Ben Ahmun scores a hat-trick while debutants make an instant impact as Pontypridd United dominate Airbus 4-0 at the USW Sport Park.
Pontypridd United began Phase Two of the JD Cymru Premier with an impressive victory over Airbus UK Broughton, climbing out of the relegation zone in the process.
The first five minutes set the pace for the game that was to come. Ponty held all the pressure and possession over Airbus, and it wasn’t long until they made the break through.
Ben Ahmun got his name on the scoresheet after a fantastic lofted ball from debutant Ben Margetson. Ahmun rose highest to the ball before looping it over Airbus keeper Lewis Dutton into the back of the net, giving the Dragons a deserved lead.
Ponty’s defence was seemingly unbreakable with Margetson, Jordan Knott and Jarrad Wright commanding control within the back line. With excellent clearances which lead to the creation of chances in midfield, the all-round performance from the back three was simply outstanding.
Throughout the first half, the chances kept coming for Ponty but nothing came to fruition. It wasn’t until the last minute of the first half that Margetson added to the scoreboard to give the Dragons their 2-0 lead before the break. A debut goal for what has been the perfect opening performance from Margetson.
The second half continued just how the first took place. There was an abundance of chances for the home side, but those opportunities were unfortunately missed. The buzz around the final third was incredible and you could feel that more goals were on the horizon.
The goal drought eventually ended as Ahmun slotted another past Dutton for his second and Ponty’s third. Once again, the goal was assisted by a debutant, but this time through Tom Davies down the left hand side.
All of the home fans were persistent with their support and that kept the tempo up for the Dragons as they kept going for goal. It looked like another was going to sneak in after Dutton came out of the box, however Corey Jenkins’ effort miraculously stopped off the line by Airbus’ Jamie Crowther.
During the final stages of the game, Ahmun returned once again to the 18-yard box to secure his hat-trick - the second time he has netted three against Airbus this season. Once again, the goal was assisted by another debutant, this being Harrison Bright who was brought on from the bench to replace the returning Luke Cummings. Bright’s assist meant three of the four goals were produced by the club’s new January signings. A great start for all four debutants and an even better start to the second half of the season for Pontypridd United.
This Saturday the Dragons travel away to face Aberystwyth Town with the hopes of bringing home another win in pursuit of staying in the JD Cymru Premier. Kick off it at 12:45pm and it will be shown live on TV via Sgorio.
